About Azerbaijani Language

Azerbaijani (Azərbaycan dili) is a Turkic language spoken by about 30 million people, primarily in Azerbaijan and Iran. It is the official language of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The language has undergone several script changes throughout history: from Arabic script (before 1929), to Latin (1929-1939), to Cyrillic (1939-1991), and back to Latin (1991-present). The current Latin-based alphabet was officially adopted in 1991 following Azerbaijan's independence from the Soviet Union.

The I/İ Distinction

One of the most important features of Azerbaijani orthography is the distinction between:

  • I/ı - Capital/lowercase dotless I (similar to Turkish)
  • İ/i - Capital/lowercase dotted I (the standard Latin i)

These represent different sounds and mixing them up changes word meanings. Our keyboard handles this distinction properly in all case conversions.
