About Coptic Language and Writing
Coptic is the latest stage of the Egyptian language, written using the Coptic script. It evolved from earlier forms of Egyptian (Old, Middle, and Late Egyptian, and Demotic) and was the language of Christian Egypt.
The Coptic alphabet was developed around the 2nd century CE, combining the Greek alphabet with additional letters from Demotic script to represent sounds unique to the Egyptian language. This created a writing system that could accurately represent the spoken Coptic language.
Today, Coptic is used primarily in the liturgy of the Coptic Orthodox Church and is studied by scholars of ancient Egypt, early Christianity, and linguistics. The Coptic script is essential for reading Coptic religious texts, biblical translations, and historical documents.
Greek and Coptic Connection
The relationship between Greek and Coptic is significant. When Christianity spread to Egypt, Greek was widely used, and the Coptic alphabet was based on the Greek uncial script. The 25 Greek-derived letters in Coptic maintain similar sounds to their Greek counterparts, making it easier for Greek speakers to learn Coptic writing. However, the 7 Demotic letters were essential additions to represent uniquely Egyptian phonemes that didn't exist in Greek.
